Some 15 years ago, Fenway CDC put forward our vision for the neighborhood we love. We called it the Urban Village Plan – a bold vision for a sustainable, livable, and vibrant urban community, with room for people of all ages, races, orientations, and economic circumstances.
We’ve taken important steps toward this vision: the Red Sox are staying put and improving historic Fenway Park, new zoning largely consistent with our vision is now in place, and newly developed projects are now home to hundreds of new neighbors. But even as we celebrate these accomplishments we must also acknowledge that the same trends that are making the Fenway more desirable – its convenience, beautiful architecture and parks, sense of community, and abundance of world-class institutions – are making it less affordable and accessible.
That’s where Fenway CDC comes in. Having served as a catalyst for the Fenway’s stability and revival, we must now make sure that a wide range of people can continue to call the Fenway home. As in the past, we will do so by developing affordable homes, giving residents tools to succeed in the local economy, and providing a voice for community residents. Our recently completed strategic plan says that we can only accomplish this if we find ways to work together with our institutional neighbors, private developers, and City Hall. But even with this new emphasis on partnerships, our success depends more than ever on the support of our members and longtime allies.
That’s where you come in. Thanks to you and your neighbors, financial support through our grassroots fundraising efforts are now our single largest source of revenue, eclipsing grants, public contracts and project fees. We’ll need more of the same in the months and years to come.
We ask you to join in assuring that the Fenway continues to be a culturally and economically diverse urban neighborhood where residents and institutions thrive side-by-side. We can’t do it without you.
